GUIDES & EXPLAINERS

Should You Buy the Samsung Galaxy S21 in 2026?

The Galaxy S21 can look like a bargain, but its support status and used condition change the buying advice in 2026.

Should You Buy the Samsung Galaxy S21 in 2026?

A cheap Galaxy S21 can look like an easy way to get a flagship phone on a small budget. The screen and design still have appeal, but in 2026 the software support situation changes my recommendation.

I would not buy the original Galaxy S21 as a main phone for the next several years. A very cheap secondary device is a different discussion, provided you understand its age and limitations.

Quick buying comparison · regional prices before promotions; used prices depend on condition
Buying question Quick answer
Recommendation Skip for a long-term main phone; limited secondary use only
US used reference From about $149; overall average about $190
Regular security support Original S21 no longer on the current list; S21 FE is separate
Screen / original battery 6.2-inch AMOLED; 4,000mAh
Deal-breakers Account lock, unpaid finance, damaged screen or costly battery repair

Why the Galaxy S21 still attracts buyers

The standard Galaxy S21 gives you a 6.2-inch AMOLED display with a high refresh rate in a relatively compact body. If you dislike large phones, that alone can make a used listing look appealing.

It also has a camera setup that covers ordinary photos and wider scenes. For someone moving from a basic older phone, those features may still feel like an improvement. However, you are buying an individual used device, not the condition it had when it launched.

I would check the display carefully for permanent marks and burn-in. A phone with a low asking price can stop being good value as soon as it needs a major repair.

Software support is the main reason I would hesitate

The original Galaxy S21 is no longer on Samsung's current regular security-update list. The Galaxy S21 FE is a different model and remains separately listed, so do not confuse the two when reading a seller's description.

That does not mean an S21 suddenly stops working. It means I would not recommend buying one now with the expectation of ongoing regular security patches for years of main-phone use.

For a device holding work accounts, private messages and payment applications, I would put remaining support ahead of the old flagship badge. A newer phone with a clear support runway can be the better purchase even if some of its hardware is less ambitious.

What is a fair price to consider?

US used listings checked for this guide started around $149, with an overall average around $190. Those are marketplace references, not a guaranteed price for a clean unlocked phone with a healthy battery.

At roughly that level, compare the total cost with a newer supported device. Add any battery replacement, delivery and tax. If the S21 needs work immediately, the original discount may disappear.

I would only consider it at a low price for a clearly limited role, such as an inexpensive secondary camera or a spare device. I would not pay extra for cosmetic condition while ignoring the end of regular support.

Inspect the battery, cameras and network status

The S21 originally shipped with a 4,000mAh battery, but the remaining capacity of a used unit depends on its history. The original specification does not tell you how long that particular phone will last today.

Record a short video, play it back with sound and test the charging port. Check the main and ultrawide cameras, focus on a near and distant subject and look for visible lens damage. Run through calls, Wi-Fi and mobile data before the return window closes.

Also confirm that the phone is not account-locked, blacklisted or still tied to unpaid finance. The seller should identify the exact model and network status. Processor and network configurations vary by region, so an imported S21 should not be assumed to match the local version.

If you already own one

Keeping a phone you already own is a different decision from spending money on another used one. If your S21 is working, back up your files and plan a replacement around your budget rather than buying an equally old phone as a sideways move.

Install the updates still available for your applications and services, but do not confuse app updates with renewed regular device security support. For work or sensitive accounts, follow the requirements of the organisation involved and prioritise a supported replacement.

My verdict

My verdict is no for a new main-phone purchase in 2026. The S21 can still perform familiar tasks, but its age, used condition and support status make it difficult to recommend for several more years of daily ownership.

Consider it only as a low-cost secondary device with clear expectations. For your main phone, spend toward remaining support and dependable condition.

Your questions answered

Is the Galaxy S21 FE the same device?

No. It is a separate model with a different release timeline. Check the full model name and its support status independently.

Will a new battery restore software support?

No. It can improve the condition of the hardware, but it does not change the device update policy.

Is the S21’s 3x zoom optical?

The standard S21 uses a hybrid zoom arrangement. Do not confuse it with the dedicated 3x optical telephoto on models such as the S23 Ultra.
