Best iPhones Under $1,000 in 2026: Spend Less Than a New Pro Max

Compare the iPhone 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, iPhone 17 and 15 Pro Max below $1,000, with buying advice for cameras, size and used-phone value.

Best iPhones Under $1,000 in 2026: Spend Less Than a New Pro Max

You do not have to spend the full $1,000 to get an iPhone with a versatile camera system and a good display. Several older Pro models fall below that budget, and the regular iPhone 17 deserves attention too.

The 16 Pro is my balanced starting point, the 16 Pro Max offers more screen space, and the 15 Pro Max can bring the cost down further. The right choice depends on whether the extra money buys a feature you need, more storage or simply a larger phone.

My quick pick: Start with the 16 Pro for cameras, choose the 16 Pro Max for screen size, or keep more money with the 15 Pro Max. The regular 17 suits buyers who want ProMotion without needing a dedicated telephoto.

Quick comparison

iPhone 16 Pro: my balanced Pro choice

The 16 Pro would be my first search for someone who wants a broad camera toolkit without buying a Max-sized phone. At a $762 average, it leaves a meaningful gap below the ceiling for the right storage and condition.

iPhone 16 Pro: A capable Pro.. A manageable size. 48MP ultrawide · 5x telephoto. 6.3-inch ProMotion display
iPhone 16 Pro. 48MP ultrawide · 5x telephoto 6.3-inch ProMotion display.

Its 48MP ultrawide, 5x telephoto and high-frame-rate 4K capabilities give it reasons to stand above older models for particular shooting needs. I like the telephoto for distant framing and the video tools for projects that actually use slow motion.

The important word is “use.” If your videos are casual social clips, spending more on storage or keeping money aside for sound and lighting may matter more than a higher recording specification. A Pro badge does not choose your priorities for you.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: when the larger screen is the point

The 16 Pro Max averages $856. It is worth considering when the large 6.9-inch display is useful for viewing, editing and reading, rather than simply treating the biggest iPhone as the automatic winner.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: More screen.. The same buying checks. 48MP ultrawide · 5x telephoto. 6.9-inch ProMotion display
iPhone 16 Pro Max. 48MP ultrawide · 5x telephoto 6.9-inch ProMotion display.

Both 16 Pro sizes have the key camera features discussed here, including the 5x telephoto. That makes size, battery condition and price especially important in the choice. You do not need the Max name just to get that particular lens.

Try holding a phone this size before buying it. Comfort during a long recording session and ease of carrying it are practical considerations. Also compare the same storage capacity: the Max starts at 256GB, which can distort a comparison with the cheapest smaller Pro.

iPhone 17: a newer everyday option

The regular 17 averages $784 in the used-market snapshot. It is worth comparing if you want a newer everyday model and are less interested in dedicated telephoto photography or professional recording formats.

iPhone 17: Look beyond the badge.. Try the regular iPhone. ProMotion display. 48MP dual-camera system
iPhone 17. ProMotion display 48MP dual-camera system.

Apple lists ProMotion and a 48MP dual-camera system on this model, so do not assume the regular-phone compromises are identical to those on the iPhone 15. Check the actual generation's features instead of applying an old buying rule to every new release.

It still needs to win on the specific offer. Compare any available new-retail price with the used unit, including warranty and returns. A small discount is not automatically persuasive when the used phone has less protection or uncertain history.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: the option that keeps more of the budget

At a $681 average, the 15 Pro Max has a straightforward appeal: you can spend less and still get USB-C with USB 3 support, a 5x telephoto and Log recording. I recommend considering it for someone who wants those tools without paying for the newest version.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: A lower bill.. Still a useful toolkit. USB-C with USB 3 support. Log video · 5x telephoto
iPhone 15 Pro Max. USB-C with USB 3 support Log video · 5x telephoto.

The 16 Pro models add improvements such as the 48MP ultrawide and higher-frame-rate 4K options. Those differences deserve attention for macro work or slow-motion projects. They are not necessarily a reason to reject a good 15 Pro Max for ordinary photography and video.

Compare battery condition, storage and repairs before calling the gap a saving. A well-kept 15 Pro Max can be attractive; a worn example needing immediate work is a different calculation.

Where I would put the money after choosing the phone

For photography and filming, I would reserve money for the things the phone cannot supply by itself: usable sound, stable framing and enough storage for the way I work. For ordinary daily use, I might simply keep the money.

None of these recommendations depends on a carrier contract or trading in another valuable device. Compare outright totals and regional compatibility. The best purchase is the one whose cost and limitations remain clear after you read the small print.

My verdict

The iPhone 16 Pro offers a balanced combination of Pro camera features and a manageable size. I recommend the 16 Pro Max when you specifically want the larger display, while the regular iPhone 17 deserves attention for everyday use.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is a useful lower-cost alternative, particularly if its camera and transfer features already cover your needs. You do not have to spend the full $1,000 to make a worthwhile purchase. Compare the condition, storage and complete offer before deciding.

Used iPhone checklist: verify activation, inspect condition and calculate the full cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max under $1,000?

Its official US starting price is $1,299 before tax. This guide does not treat trade-in credits or a carrier promotion as an unconditional sub-$1,000 price.

Does the 16 Pro have the same 5x telephoto as the 16 Pro Max?

Both models include a 5x telephoto. Size, storage, condition and battery needs remain reasons to choose between them.

Should I buy used if the new price is close?

Compare the full offer. A small saving can be outweighed by warranty, returns and battery condition; do not assume used always means better value.
